Call It What You Will, We’ll Take The Holiday!
August 1, 2012
In Ontario it’s Simcoe Day. In Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Prince Edward Island it’s simply Civic Holiday. In B.C. it’s British Columbia Day, in N.B. it’s New Brunswick Day — and it’s Saskatchewan Day in, you guessed it, Saskatchewan. In Manitoba it’s called Civic Holiday, but it’s not a statutory holiday. In Alberta it is known as Heritage Day, but it’s not a stat either. Same in Nova Scotia where it’s called Natal Day. In Quebec, Newfoundland and the Yukon it’s not a holiday at all.
I’m talking, of course, about the first Monday in August, one of our three precious summer long weekends (for most of us anyway). The date was selected in part because it broke up one of the largest stretches of the Canadian calendar without a holiday. It also just makes sense – the weather doesn’t get much better than the beginning of August, so why not celebrate?
One thing you might not know about this rather unheralded holiday is that it is historically linked to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834, and in many Canadian communities, Emancipation Day celebrations are also held. Now there’s a reason to celebrate.
With summer in full swing, many Canadians celebrate outdoors, either in their own backyards, at friends’ or neighbours’ or in parks and beaches. As always, Tre Stelle® is here to help you celebrate, with some great recipes custom-designed for summer entertaining. Here are a few selections – and have a great holiday, whatever you choose to call it.

Italian Style Grilled Stuffed Peppers: Simple and tasty, this recipe uses mini multicoloured bell peppers that are halved and grilled. The next step is to add Tre Stelle® Bocconcini Cheese, drained and cut into halves, and continue cooking on the barbecue until the cheese is melted. The coup de grâce is a drizzle of pesto sauce and a scattering of crumbled pancetta (Italian bacon). Your guests will be calling out for more.
Melon Carpaccio: A perfect hot summer day dish. Shaved cantaloupe slices are topped with a scattering of Tre Stelle® mini mini Bocconcini Cheese then drizzled with a dressing of orange juice, lime juice, cilantro and honey that has been boiled and cooled. Sweet, light and delicious!
Mango Chutney Celery Sticks: A fresh, tasty appetizer that takes the old processed cheese-filled celery sticks to a new level. Mayonnaise, mango chutney, green onions, lime juice and a dash of cayenne pepper are mixed with shredded Dofino® Havarti Cheese, Herbs & Spices.
